The Perception of a Private Investigator

How society views a profession is directly impacted by our interactions with people that work in that industry. In the case of private investigators most people don’t know or have experience working with an actual investigator. As a result, individuals form stereotypes or preconceived ideas prompted by entertainment mediums such as movies or television shows like “Cheaters”.

However, the danger in gaining knowledge through entertainment is that fictional storylines are unlikely to depict realistic scenarios. Despite almost obvious gross exaggerations used to increase a sense of drama and suspense, viewers often believe that real-life investigators and investigations mirror that of their fictional counterparts.

Because of this perception, potential clients create unrealistic expectations when seeking the services of an investigator. Television often displays private investigators performing activities that are unethical and/or illegal such as trespassing on private property, tapping phone lines, or gathering/using private communication and financial records. While shows characterize private investigators as quasi-vigilantes that are frequently engaging in improper and/or illegal activities via using any means necessary to obtain their goal, the reality is that there isn’t always a wealth of free open information at one’s disposal.

Private investigators must work in a calculated, strategic manner drawing from experience to gather as much relevant information as possible. Often their job is complicated by a desire to work through an investigation in as invisible a fashion as possible so that those they are tracking or pursuing are unaware of their presence.

It is important to remember that contrary to popular opinion, investigators do not have special privileges when on a case. He/she must follow the letter of the law or be subject to criminal charges. Questionable tactics may work occasionally, but over the long haul, intelligent and clean work prevails.

Inexperienced or part-time investigators may make big promises but yield minimal results. Conversely an experienced and true professional may not sell a potential client with gaudy promises; but they will use their knowledge and experience to deliver relevant evidence via a thorough and discreet investigation.
