Can divorce be good for your kids? The simple answer is not so simple. Like most situations, the specific individual circumstances surrounding a potential divorce matter. However, if you are frequently fighting with your spouse in front of your child/children, the air of negativity that surrounds your household is logically going to affect anyone living there.
The weight of that tension, even if it is not guided at your children, is difficult for kids to avoid. Furthermore, depending on their age and level of maturity, children may misinterpret the situation, wrongly assigning blame to him/her self.
This guilt can translate into other aspects of their life, inhibiting their ability to act as they normally would and potentially causing them to act out as a means of releasing pent-up emotion. Conversely, they can become withdrawn because they don’t want to display their emotions in front of anyone, be it friends or family.
Speaking of carryover, a stressful combative relationship will inevitably put you in an unpleasant mental state, and this change in mood can affect your performance as a parent. Your habits and actions directly correlate to your child. Hence depressed parent/parents can lead to a depressed and under-nurtured child.
It’s important to lead by example as a parent to place your child in an environment that allows him/her to flourish. While the idea of maintaining a united front may seem like a good idea, the most important element is keeping a positive and stable home.
If your relationship with your spouse is beyond repair, the best example you can provide your children is the ability to recognize a failing relationship and move on from it.
