Wealthy People More Likely to Cheat and Lie

A study performed by Paul Piff at the University of California, Berkeley suggests that those who perceive themselves as wealthy are indeed more likely to cheat and lie. The key question is why? If an individual has superior financial means, what motivates him/her to cheat?

The simple answer is a matter of point of view and empathy.

Compared to their less affluent counterparts, wealthy individuals obtain a level of financial independence. This independence creates situations in which they do not have to rely on others for help, such as family and friends, during times of need.

As a result, this independence can create ego-driven people that spurn the rules/laws of society in order to achieve their own personal gain. This characteristically greedy behavior may be a result of the “dog eat dog” mentality that many successful individuals need to arrive at their position of power.

Through success, these people can afford or have earned the right to live by their own rules apart from societal norms/expectations. However, this separate set of rules approach can go beyond the laws of finance and apply to the laws of fidelity.

Money is a great equalizer, as it can often lure a desired sexual partner. Wealthy individuals who regularly lie and cheat in the name of financial success carry these traits into their personal lives, partially because they can get away with it. Once again, the above the law mentality applies, and certain individuals are driven to push the limits of their relationship.

Wealthy men want to see if they can gain intimacy with an array of women due in part to their competitive nature and sometimes their complete disregard for the laws of fidelity. Furthermore, they’re simply motivated by the idea of seeing what they can get away with. Unlike modest earners, wealthy men can afford to lavishly spend on their mistress.

In the end, it appears that wealth, for some, allows these individuals to buy into a different set of rules, both in business and the bedroom.
